Tweed Seagulls defeat the Sunshine Coast Falcons in a high scoring match

By Jordan Herbert

The Sunshine Coast Falcons were defeated by the Tweed Seagulls in their Sunday afternoon match at Tugun, 42 points to 28. The match was the round 10 clash that had to be rescheduled due to the COVID-19 lockdown. A high scoring game with a total of 70 points being bled from the match.

A game where attack seemed to be the only strength for both teams, poor defence from both the home and away team saw the score board continuing to tick over try after try.

The first half was all in the favour of the home team scoring 24 points in the first 35 minutes of play. The first half momentum was 100% with the Seagulls with all the points and attack just going their way.

The home team scoring in the 8th minute through Tyler Han, the 10th minute through James Torrens, the 22nd minute through Ben Liyou and before half time in the 27th minute through Harraydn Wilson. With their goal kicker James Torrens converting 4 from 4.

As the half time siren sang the Falcons had a lot of work to put into the second half if they wanted to come back in this game.

Seagulls led 24 points to nil.

As the Falcons ran out for the second half of this clash it seemed that they had some fire in their belly and were ready to come back and put some points on the board.

A penalty to the Falcons and a long kick down field put them in great field position, a powerful run from Blake Wilson with a classy pass saw a try in the 42nd minute of play through winger Pat McGinn putting his team on the board for the first time of the afternoon.  A missed conversion left the score 24-4 to Seagulls.

But it didn’t take the away team long to strike again, another try in the 45th minute of play through poor defence from the home team saw a hole open for interchange hooker Nick Ellems, paired with a successful conversion from John McLaughlin, 24-10 Seagulls.

The away team went over once more in the 51st minute with the fancy foot work of Blake Wilson who has had a position change from fullback into the centres for the Falcons. Another successful conversion from their regular goal kicker Jai Smoothy. 24-16 Seagulls

It was as though the momentum had shifted to the away team but just as it looked like the away team were in for a come back the Seagulls had other plans. Scoring another quick 3 tries saw them have a heavy lead over the Falcons.

The Falcons looked dangerous once again with 15 minutes to go scoring in the 69th minute through Kane Jackson and once again in the 71st minute through Sam Reid. With Jai Smoothy converting two more. 36-28 Seagulls.

The home team scored for a final time just two minutes before the full-time siren, leaving the final score to be Tweed Seagulls 42 Sunshine Coast Falcons 28.

A disappointing loss for Coach Jamie Vogler and his team who still sit in the top four of the Hasting Deerings Colts ladder. The team takes on Northern Pride next Saturday, the 31st of July at Barlow Park, Cairns.
